Millions of people in quarantine again due to new cases of coronavirus in China
BEIJING, July 7 (FENA) – Tens of millions of people had to go into isolation in China as businesses in Xi’an were forced to close their doors, due to new cases of the coronavirus that fueled fears of a return to full lockdown.
Health authorities reported more than 300 infections on Wednesday, with clusters registered in the northern city of Xi’an as well as the country’s largest city, Shanghai, AFP reported.
The new cases and the official response to them have deepened fears that China could return to strict restrictions like those earlier this year, when Beijing’s zero-Covid policy saw tens of millions of residents locked down for weeks.
In Shanghai, some residents reported on social media on Tuesday that they had received rations of food because they were not allowed to go out, reminiscent of a return to the long lockdown imposed by China in the spring.
