The Chamber of Commerce of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in cooperation with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, within the framework of the project Decarbonization of the energy sector in BiH (DecES), organized on 31.01.2023. information session on renewable energy communities (RECs) in Brčko
Representatives of the Chamber of Commerce of the Brčko District of BiH, private companies from the Brčko District of BiH, non-governmental associations, and representatives of the Department for European Integration and International Cooperation and the Department for Economic Development, Sports and Culture of the Government of Brčko contributed to this informative session. district of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The focus of the information session was:
• ZOE concept,
• who can be a ZOE member,
• how ZOE are established,
• what is the legal framework and advantages of ZOE.
Many countries of the European Union are currently introducing mandatory measures and recommendations to limit the consumption of electricity and encourage its environmentally friendly production and responsible use. It was the energy crisis that showed that all available tools and measures are necessary in order to achieve energy savings and goals from the European Green Plan.
Energy transition with the participation of citizens and local communities is also possible in BiH, through the concept of ZOE, which is also recognized in the laws on renewable energy sources of the Republic of Srpska (RS), the Federation of BiH (FBiH) and the Brčko District of BiH (BD BiH).

In order to improve and strengthen the conditions for the decarbonization of the energy sector with a focus on the promotion of energy efficiency and renewable energy, DecES is focused on the promotion of renewable energy through energy community projects.
In this regard, within the scope of DecES, it is planned to launch a public call in the current year for the application of a project idea for ZOE, for which technical assistance would be provided in the preparation of business plans.
The public call will be open for submission of project ideas whose holders can be local self-government units, public enterprises, non-governmental associations, small and medium-sized enterprises and individuals.
